Boat hull damage marked with blue tape for repair.

DAMAGE SURVEYS

Overview

A damage survey is carried out to assess the extent, cause, and implications of damage sustained to a vessel following an incident such as collision, grounding, heavy weather, fire, flooding, machinery failure, or accidental impact. The purpose of the survey is to provide owners, insurers, repairers, and legal representatives with an independent professional assessment of the vessel’s condition and the repairs required.

The survey will typically begin with identification of the vessel and a review of the circumstances surrounding the incident, including any available maintenance records, repair invoices, photographs, or statements relating to the damage. A detailed inspection is then undertaken to examine affected areas of the hull, structure, machinery, systems, and onboard equipment.

Particular attention is given to identifying cracks, deformation, corrosion, laminate failure, water ingress, compromised welds, damaged fittings, or hidden defects that may affect the vessel’s safety, seaworthiness, or value.

The report will document the nature and extent of the damage, likely cause where determinable, and the surveyor’s opinion regarding necessary repairs or replacement of components. Recommendations may also be made regarding further specialist inspection by qualified marine engineers, electricians, naval architects, or other experts where required.

A damage survey provides an independent record of the damage sustained and assists owners, insurers, and other interested parties in making informed decisions regarding repairs, claims, liability, and the continued operation of the vessel.
