INSURANCE SURVEY

Overview

An insurance survey is carried out to assess the general condition, structural integrity, and critical systems of a vessel for insurance underwriting purposes. The survey provides insurers and owners with an independent professional opinion regarding the vessel’s condition at the time of inspection and identifies any defects, safety concerns, or maintenance requirements that may affect insurability or ongoing operation.

The inspection focuses primarily on the condition of the hull, deck, superstructure, accessible structural components and critical equipment.

The hull is examined using visual inspection together with percussive sounding and ultrasonic thickness testing or moisture readings to assess structural condition and identify signs of corrosion, osmosis, delamination, cracking, impact damage, distortion, or previous repairs. Hull fittings, keel attachments, rudders, stern gear, and through-hull penetrations are also inspected where accessible.

The survey will normally include an inspection of the vessel’s internal structure, bilges, bulkheads, tanks, and accessible framing to identify signs of deterioration, water ingress, corrosion, movement, or poor repair workmanship.

Safety-related equipment such as fire extinguishers, bilge pumps, navigation lights, ventilation, fuel systems, gas installations, and electrical systems may also be visually reviewed as part of the overall assessment, although this does not constitute a detailed electrical or mechanical inspection unless specifically agreed.

The final report will document the vessel’s overall condition, identify defects or recommendations for repair and maintenance, and provide guidance regarding matters requiring attention by insurers or owners.

A hull condition and insurance survey is intended to provide a practical assessment of the vessel’s present condition and suitability for continued insurance cover, helping owners and insurers make informed decisions regarding maintenance, risk, and seaworthiness.
